Chevy Volt – There’s an App for That

Written by Corey Mullane | Wednesday, 19 May 2010 | 1 Comment

Nowadays there’s an app for everything. Whether it’s remembering where you parked your car, wanting to know what that DTC code that just popped up on your dash is or even keeping up to date with the latest LOLCat, there seems to be an app for anything you could ever need. The General thinks they can add a little icing to the app cake though and have announced that the Chevy Volt will have an app of its very own. Developed by the always ingenuitive OnStar team, the app dubbed “OnStar Experience” is quite a breakthrough in vehicle connectivity.

This isn’t your normal generic infotainment app though, this app will gather specific details about your Volt and aggregate all of that data right into the palm of your hand. But what kind of information could an app for my car possibly deliver to me? Well I’m glad that you asked! The Volt serves several key functions that could easily be integrated into any car (hint – Cruze/Aveo/Spark) and a few EV-specific functions as well. The EV-specific deals are the ability to remotely program vehicle charge times, track EV miles (and miles per gallon in extended-range mode) and check battery charge status, all of which is a pretty neat way to keep track of your new Volt. The features that we could easily see make it into the next gen of our favorite tuner cars would be the ability to remote start your, precondition the cabin and lock and unlock the doors – all from your iPhone or Droid.

This app for the Volt is going to start a trend that we think we’ll see start to be integrated into each new vehicle launch from GM and one we blissfully await. We took some screen shots of the app in its entirety below that you can check out as well as a video of the app running (skip to the 1:44 mark).

After looking this app over what do you think? Is this feature cool enough that it would influence your buying decision towards a vehicle that had its very own app? Let us know below in the comments!

Awesome! I guess if you have the money to buy the Volt, you should be able to afford the iPhone's monthly bill.
